  • Vocal : Luis
  • Bass : Nightwind
  • Keyboard : Ying Liao
  • Drum : Bassonly
  • Guitar : Skyler

Sanskrit

Band

"Their music sounds like Incubus!”
“Their music really has the Indian feel”You probably have heard these comments in many band shows you have seen. But who are they? So let's check them out – Sanskrit
Date: March 2004
Time: 9pm
Place: Some park in Mong Kok
In a quiet night, we meet up 5 guys who are very into playing music to do an interview with DigProject. We hope that through this interview, we can give the audience a better understanding to Sanskrit, but then...
The Forming of Sanskrit
DJ Pong, guitarist Wilson and bassist Fat Yuk were from the same secondary school. They had known for each other for quite awhile. Wilson then met vocal Siu Wu when they studied in Poly U. Sometimes they met up with the former drummer Sam to play some music. However, due to that Sam's departure from the band, they found a new drummer Jackal. At that time the band wanted to recruit a DJ so they asked DJ Pong to join and the five formed the Sanskrit.
The Reason of Playing Music
Siu Wu says that he was forced to play the violin when he was in the secondary school. That was the time he listened to classical music. He soon discovered more about music and it slowly became his journey. Wilson and Fat Yuk wanted to play in a band because their interest in music has grown. Jackal tells us that he sees music as his job. He does it because he loves it. As for DJ Pong, he says his friends who play music influence him; as a result, he wanted to play music too.
The Name of Sanskrit and Its Style
Since all of the members like Indian music, therefore they wanted to find some Indian thing to represent themselves. "Sanskrit" is an ancient language of India used for literary and religious purposes for over two thousand years. They liked the word and used it for their band's name. In the earlier days, Sanskrit is more toward Indian style of rock. Later on, they started to listen to some nu-metal bands. Its influence has given them a new element. Adding the nu-metal to the Indian rock, that becomes their music style. This is why so many audience will say their music has the Indian flavor.
Music Creation
Siu Wu has the best ideas in the morning around 7am and the time when he takes a bath. Fat Yuk and Jackal thinks that listening to more music can give them ideas. It happened one time that during a phone conversation, all of the sudden they had a very good idea and they use the phone recording to record the melody. Later on they went back to their band room to discuss. Sometimes when listening to some songs, if they hear something good, they will like to try the ideas in their own songs.
Most Memorable Show
DJ Pong : Motclub 903 at Kowloon Bay HITEC. Since it was my 2nd time doing show, I was nervous that I would make mistake and play poorly. I tried to make myself enjoy the show as much as I could. And the outcome, I played well and it was unforgettable.Siu Wu : The first time going to Macau. The people there were so passionate, which gave me a lot of confidence. I enjoyed that show a lot!Fat Yuk, Wilson & Jackal : Taiwan's festival "Spring Scream". The whole show last 3 days and 2 nights. There were non stop performance and the audience were so into the show which created very good atmosphere. We saw audience got so high that they jumped up on the stage to sing and dance with the performance. We feel that they really like music and we really enjoy the opportunity to play on the stage.
About the Band Scene
Sanskrit hope there will be more new bands coming out. They will do their best to write more good songs. As long as they can still play, then they will be happy and not disappointed. Siu Wu used to dislike the fact that there are many little girls going to him to take photos with. He hopes that they are there because they like Sanskrit. Also he hopes that through Sanskrit, they can listen to more local bands instead of just focusing on Sanskrit.
Most Update
Since the Taiwan's festival with another local band Vibration, they are now working hard to record their demo. They found Big Head Buddha's guitarist as the album's producer, and Site Access's CM as assistant producer. They hope they can finish the album by end of summer.
Addition
During the interview, we find that they are really playful and funny. They always make a lot of jokes. Sometimes we have no clue if their answers are real or not. They also have a lot of facial expression. The whole interview is finished under a lot of laughs. We really wish them well on their recording and the release of their first ever album.

FFC interview

DiG Project (D)
Robert from Firefly Conspiracy (R)
D: So tell us about this band?
R: The band is more an experimental band. Originally there were 3 groups in our band. The band members are Danny (vocals), Robert (guitar, vocals), Corey (guitar), Jaya (bass) and Luke (drums). We are a group of people who listen to different style of music and we don't really have one style. Robert said he grew up listening to the 80s rock. The vocal is more into new age. Our bassist is into alternative rock, meanwhile the drummer has a flavor of jazz. We are open-minded people so we always try to put different things together to create our own music. We try to explore more areas like jazz, pop, hardcore, rock and then mix them together. When you listen to our songs, you will find out different elements.D: Tell us a bit about your background?R: I am half Filipino half Spanish. Danny the vocal is from Canada. Drummer Luke is from Australia. Corey is Canadian born Chinese and Jaya is half-Malay and half-Filipino. So this is like an international band.
D: So what do you think of the idea band show?
R: I really like the idea of Woodstock. It's really amazing because you can have different style of music going together. Music really is supposed to bring people together. No matter what style it is, it is just one! It's to touch as many people's life. We don't want to be narrow-minded.
D: Anything to inspire you to play in a band?
R: Well, Third Eye Blind is one of the reasons I am now playing in the band, when I heard their music I told myself I want to be in a band. I was really into music, from the moment I got my first walkman, I listened to music all the time and I said to myself "hey, at least I gotta try to put a band together, try and learn to play guitar and drums"
* Robert is a decent drummer who has played the drums more than his guitar!

D: You been here in Hong Kong for 13 years now, so what do you think of playing in a band in Hong Kong?
R: From what I understand, there is a barrier in the language area. Since FFC is an English band, there is always a barrier. FFC mostly touches the English speaking community; in fact, it only touches the hardcore community. It's hard because of our language barrier. In Hong Kong, majority of people listens to Canton pop. It's hard for band to touch the people; especially we are an English band. If we try to change our language, it will still be a little bit of people. As far as I know the hardcore community is still very small. Maybe if we change to canto pop, we will get more exposure. I really respect that fact that King Ly Chee is doing. They are using Chinese language to touch the Chinese community.

D: Tell us about what's FFC's future in 5 years.
R: Well, after the summer of 2004, our band will split up because 2 of our members will be leaving. Our vocal and spokesman Danny will leave to another city. The band will never be the same because his voice represents this band. The band is not gonna be together in the next 5 years. For now the way the direction of the band does, there is no 5 years. Right now, we are focusing on the demo. We wanted to have a demo long time ago but we were lazy. Now we finally get to do it and to me, it will be good quality. There will be 8 songs in it and it's gonna put a period to this band.
D: So you have a new band now?
R: Well, I am starting a new band. I say it will be a rock & roll band. Something likes Foo Fighters. Don't know the direction, we will see!

During the interview, we talked a lot about music. At first we thought the interview would be about 30 minutes long, but at the end, we end up talking for over an hour. It was a pleasure to talk to a nice person like Robert who shared a lot of his thoughts to us. We wish Robert and other members from FFC well in the future, no matter its music or life in general.

YC interview

First of all, I needs to give an apology to YC because even after watching YC performed for 5, 6 times, I was still very unclear its members. Good thing is that after the interview with the band, we now have a better idea about the guys and their music.Walking inside YC' s band room, you can see different kind of posters, some life size promotional card board and variety of action figures. YC told us that this is a place of their "Own", so they called their music "Own Music". So what it is like to see a band made up by 6 big kids?
The bassist Bob, also talked the most during the interview, said, "In the beginning, YC was formed by Kid, Billy, me and some old members. We first played some cover songs by Beyond. We had played in competition before. Some members left and new members joined."Guitarist Kid said, "Actually YC has 3 years of history. "Another guitarist Ko Fung quickly added, "I have joined for only 2 months!" Bob added, "The band had gone through some line up changes, therefore the members all came in different time. Our recent line up is only 2 months old."
The band members now are Hei (Vocal), Billy (Vocal & Sampling), Kid (Guitar), Ko Fung (Guitar), Bob (Bass) and Daniel (Drums). So why did they called themselves YC? Is there any special reason? Bob said, "Actually we are about to change to a Chinese name called Yan Chong." Kid said, "We called ourselves YC in the very beginning, there wasn't any reason or any special meaning. The name came up when we had a senseless talk. We just thought the name is easy to remember, so that's why we are still using this name today," said Kid. Bob then concluded, "Yeah, YC is easy to remember and the name is sexy!" (Sexy? How?)
So how did the guys form the band and what type of music they play? When it comes to songwriting, is there topic they like to write, or certain message they want to say to their audience? We used to be classmates or colleagues, we just wanted to play in a band, not much reason so it's pretty natural." The very quiet Daniel finally said, "I am only neighbor to them, not much related." Bob then continued what he left off, "Daniel used to play in a J-Rock band. Their band room is located on the 7th floor and ours is on 12th. Later our drummer left us and we found out Daniel wanted to switch to other style of music, so we asked him to play for us. Then Hei came in replacing a singer who left the band. Later on Ko Fung joined us and here we have today's YC."
"As for the music direction," Bob again got interrupted, this time by Ko Fung, "We play 'Own Music', something we like and everything we play is considered our favorite style."Bob explained, "The messages we want to say are similar to many Nu-Metal bands have. We talk about things we don't agree in our lives. But then we play music not because we have certain message we want to say. We aren't any great people and we can't change this world, so let's just get together and be happy." Other members also agreed with Bob, they also gave a name to their music.Kid said, "It's called Happy Metal, so we are Happy Metal Guys."
During the 45 minutes of the interview, there were not many questions asked; however, YC did give us lot of fun. One moment they acted TV show host, then the next second they pretended they were securities. Even though they were a bit silly, I could feel that they are really serious about their music. As they suggested that their goal is to bring YC's music to more people.

Venomousuicide interview

Attention please! “Venomousuicide” has changed their name to “Venomouside”
Venomouside has been playing for over 3 years now. Most of the members are from same high school and they have known each other for quite a long time. The band music style is considered Nu-metal. However, in the future of time, they will try to add more style and elements to their songs that should give their music more diversity.

As the four members are still full time students, they have gone through a lot of tough times when it comes to playing music. Back to the days when they were still in the high school, they didn’t have the money to rent a band room. As a result, they found some left over room from some dirty ugly industrial building. After a period of time, they couldn’t stand the poor environment anymore. The place was so dirty that they couldn’t even focus on the playing. Therefore, last year they decided to rent some much improved band room so then they will have a better place to write music. Now they will go to the band room to play roughly 2-3 times a week.
Vocal Venomou tells us that before when they performed on stage, they used to have certain expectation to the audience. However, after some review within the band, they think there are still many improvements needed. They suggest that when playing in a show, they are the entertainer so they should try to give as much entertainment to the people. Rather to have the feedback from the audience, the band will prefer the crowd to have more satisfaction and a good time. The show in Warehouse, February 15, 2003 is considered their most memorable one. That night they gave out their best and they had a really good performance. The reaction from the audience was great. With many bands they like also playing in that night, the band really thinks it’s a perfect night and they enjoy that show a lot.
Since the members have only played their instruments for a short period of time, there are still areas they can work on. Now their priority is to improve their skill. The band doesn’t have much big plan for the near future. For the moment they will concentrate on doing better songs first, maybe then they will think about recording demo or EP.
The interview was done in a short time, so we cannot understand Venomouside that well. However, if you are interested to find out more about them, please go to their website
www.venomouside.com, There you should be able to find more information about the band.

Milk & Cookies interview

For the people who often go to local band show, Milk & Cookies should be a familiar name. Since their performance in Wan Chai live two years ago, they have gained a share of popularity in the local band scene. The band is Terrance (vocal), Richie (MC), Mushie (guitar), Mike (drums) and Glenn (Bass). When they first formed, they played mostly cover songs by Deftones, Incubus and etc.
One can say that Milk & Cookies belong to the genre of Nu-Metal and Rock, though they enjoy different style of music. Terrance likes R&B music while Richie is a die hard fan of Hip-Hop. Other members describe Richie as a Hip-Hop Purist. Mike, Glenn and Mushie are into Acid Jazz Funk, Eclectic Music and "Justin Timeberlake" (Yes, this is Mushie's answer). So when they put all those styles into their creation, it becomes a unique sound that belongs to Milk & Cookies.
As all five members are Filipinos, there will be a certain degree of difficulty to promote their music. Hong Kong's regular music listeners, heavily influenced by Hong Kong's Canto Pop, usually don't understand their music and its heart and soul. Using music as the media, they want to bring a message to those who only listen to pop music, that playing music is their interest and a way to past their time. It is also their attitude to make heavy and alternative music. The band wants those listeners to know that there are variety of music and hope they will learn to appreciate different style of music.
The members state that they want to write Chinese songs since Terrance and Richie know some Cantonese; still it's not their mother language and the voicing is complex so they will learn Mandarin instead. If they can learn the language, then they can write Mandarin lyrics which help them to promote their music in Taiwan. They believe the music scene in Taiwan is well developed and has a good amount of supporters. Taiwan's population is higher than Hong Kong, so it should have more room for their music. When asked the engine that drives this band, they all agree that it is their friendship which cannot be missed. Here's a suggestion from the band, try not to focus to the music when you start a band because having a good bonding will help solving problems and arguments when creating music in the future. The friendship between members can prevent a sorrow break up.
The performance in City U was considered as a more memorable show. Most of the people who went to that show were for Fatjob and King Ly Chee. Many of them had not heard of Milk & Cookies. To them, it was just an opportunity to go on stage and to meet some band sound audience. However, the audience gave them a lot of support which the members later said it was beyond their thought. Those supports gave the band more confidence to play and create their music. They also become friends to many of bands such as Fatjob, King Ly Chee and etc.
Their ideal band show should be a performance filled with much diversity of bands, given that they can exchange different type of musical ideas. Audience and performers can fully enjoy the music from the show. At the end of the interview, Milk & Cookies tell us they are now busy recording demo, hoping that they can release the very first EP later this year to open another way for people to know them and to listen to their music.
